COVID-19 Update

March 23, 2020

To All Our Valued Patients,

I would like to provide clarification on the previous COVID update from our office.  We returned home to Kamloops on March 6th from the dental conference and no one in the office had travelled since.  We returned to work on Mar. 9, unaware that there were any concerns.  On March 16th, as soon as the notice was given by the Provincial Health Officer to self-isolate, we closed the office to comply with their recommendations.  At this time, I can inform you that our entire staff have completed the period of self-isolation and, thankfully, no one has exhibited any symptoms.   I am confident to report that those patients treated between Mar. 9th- 16th are safe from any COVID-19 infection stemming from our office.

Further, I would like to inform you of the state of our office moving forward.  The College of Dental Surgeons of BC, our regulatory body, has issued the directive that it “strongly recommends” all dental offices in BC cease any elective or non-essential treatment.  This means that only emergency treatment will be provided.  The definition of dental emergency is uncontrolled bleeding, pain or infection.  In addition, because dental treatment generates aerosols that can easily spread the virus, treatment can only be performed with proper personal protective equipment (PPE) including fitted N95 masks, face shields and body drapes.  However, this PPE is essential for hospitals to treat COVID-19 patients and, understandably, is not available to dental offices at this time.    Therefore, dentistry across the province has been reduced to phone-in service only, as performing any treatment without this equipment risks infecting our team and, subsequently, infecting any other patients we treat.  We cannot endanger anyone in this way.  Currently, the BC Dental Association is working with dental specialists to set up dental emergency centres around the province to handle extreme cases.

Rest assured that Dr. Kelsie Sallis, Dr. Corbin Sallis and I will be available on a rotational on-call basis to answer your calls.  We can provide advice on how to handle any concerns and prescribe medications, as appropriate.  We understand this may result in some inconvenience and discomfort for a period much longer than we would choose.  However, these are unprecedented times and we must all try to live within the bounds that the Health Authorities have given us.

Further, if you do have a dental concern, do not call the hospital or visit the emergency room, as you will be endangering yourself with infection and, will be hampering the doctors and nurses trying to protect lives.  Please call our office (250-372-9131) and we will do our best to help you.  As we have witnessed, this situation is fluid and as your health care provider, I will do my best to keep you informed in the days ahead.  I urge you to follow the instructions of our Health Authorities, take the appropriate precautions, stay healthy and we will look forward to taking care of your dental needs in the near future.

Best regards,

David Ciriani and your Sagehills Dental team

To all our valued patients,

We are sure that you have heard in the media that there was a confirmed case of COVID-19 at the Pacific Dental Convention that was recently held in Vancouver BC on March 05th - 07th. We wanted to reach out to you to keep you informed of the most up to date information that has been given to us by our governing bodies and the Provincial Health Team.

While some of our staff were present at the Pacific Dental Convention and did return to work the following week (March 09th) , we did so before any announcement that there was a possible case.  We were informed by the Pacific Dental Convention on March 12th with this information, that the risk was very low and to monitor for symptoms but to take no other measures.  As of Monday morning, the province and BC Health Services has instructed us that additional cases have been confirmed and that anyone who attended the conference should self isolate until Sunday, March 22.  Our regulatory body, the CDSBC, also yesterday, strongly advised all dental offices in the province to cease treating non-emergent patients, which we have done in closing our office.  The office will remain closed until it is safe for all to reopen. In case of an emergency, please phone the office to get the number of the dentist on call.

Please take comfort in knowing that none of our team has any symptoms and have been home since March 06th.  In all matters of this unprecedented situation, we have followed all recommendations from the CDSBC, and Provincial  Health Services.

As a Dental Office, on a daily basis we exercise the highest levels of cleanliness, and sterilization.  We are proud to have always adopted the highest standards in our practice, and practice them daily.

If you have any concerns or are unsure about symptoms, Please contact the provincial health link (dial 811) or complete the online assessment.  We will continue to follow the recommendations of Provincial Health and the Provincial Dental College.

Thank you for reaching out with your questions, we will be in contact with any updates that we may have.
